doqi Mtsvane meets Baltimore

GRAPE: Mtsvane REGION: Kakheti COUNTRY: Georgia AVE PRICE: $20

Growing up in Baltimore City is akin to fermenting on the skins, seeds, and stems.  Step up and you’ll find that diplomacy comes wrapped in a fist. We may have a blunt edge, but our honesty and big hearts charm.

I’ve been thinking that childhood is fermentation for people. Fermentation in my neighborhood required that our mothers often filter our foul mouths with soap. I’m not joking. My friend’s mother made him wash his mouth out with soap. Unfortunately, he swallowed quite a bit too much and his mother had to take him to the hospital. I assure you this taught him nothing and his mouth was dirtier than ever afterwards.

doqi Mtsvane may have been made close 6,000 miles from my hometown, but drinking this wine I have to imagine that the people of Georgia have quite a bit in common with the people of Baltimore. They must be mentally tough and have a solid work ethic. The doqi Mtsvane Qvevri 2014 is the perfect cultural fit in Baltimore. Why? Because, this wine is diverse. It’s firm, yet has an elegant charm. It’s salty and savory. It cleanses your mouth. It’s liquid gold and transcends your local. doqi is delicious on it’s own and you could sip it while you’re working the corner or overlooking the harbor from Federal Hill. It could be consumed by in a dive bar or at a fancy dinner. Like the people of Baltimore, the juice was fermented on the skins and seeds.

Baltimoreans get yourself a bottle and grab your local favorites; crab cakes, Lake trout, chicken box, or Polock Johnny’s sausages. But honestly, my favorite pairing is still dumping a ton of @oldbay_seasoning all over a bag of salty/oily chips. We don’t get crab chips up in here (helLA) so I got to make my own.

Viticcio Wine Dinner at SottoLA

VIT

Last night’s dinner @sottola reminded what wine and food is really about.

It’s about sharing.

It’s about friends and family.

It’s that warm feeling you get around your loved ones.

Wine shouldn’t be about trends or an ideology.

Wine should have a heart and a soul.

Wine should help us cut through all the troubling moments and bring us all back to what’s most important in life, love.

For me the most special part about wine is sense memory. Tasting Viticcio’s wines last night, I was taken back my Aunt’s restaurant in Little Italy, Baltimore. Walking through the door you received a warm embrace and you knew you were in her home, not a business. She had heart and the place had soul. The combination of Viticcio’s delicious wines and spectacular company last night transported to many memories of dinner at Sergi’s Ice House.

Viticcio Wines offer tradition and with a touch of modernity. The wines are spectacular with food and laughter.

It was a pleasure to spend the evening with these lovely people, thanks you! @dobianchi @viticciowinery @sottola @raffasquer @alona_gavryliuk @granfondowine @samson8800 @dwfredman  @wellcomalba @francetti_minesco @enoicala @foodiamo_official

Viticcio Wine Dinner at SottoLA

A damn good beer by @sevvies

fullsizerender

Being an adult looks stressful. That’s why I decided to toast to all you miserable fucks driving back and forth on Sunset Blvd with this most delicious creation by Ryan Severy @sevvies he is the Director of Liquid Bread @silverlakewine I’m sure you know him and I’m sure he’s poured more wine into your glass than most of you would care to admit. He’s also friendly and not bad looking. Ryan set out to make a white ale brewed with coriander, orange peel, & chamomile. But yeast has another plan and took this in another direction, sour. But not a full on Sour. However, this is more of a partial sour. And as the beer warmed the sour element softened and became much more subtle and I started getting some baked lemon and soft spiciness. I decided to snack. Look, I’m a hungry man. I had salty chips and made heavily limed guacamole. Perfect pairing. And smoked half a Davidoff cigarillo which also worked well. I’m not sure how many bottles Ryan has left but it would be worth it to bother him about it. Someone please back Ryan so he is brewing beer full time soon. I’m thirsty.
